LETTER FROM RACE DIRECTOR STEVE LANZILOTTA
A sincere thank you for
helping to make the Fifth Annual Marathon Relay a huge success. From the
fine weather, to the general camaraderie, to the positive response to the
goodwill team and the final lap run by a dozen Colonials made this year's event
not the biggest but certainly the best. Congratulations go to
newcomer Somerville Roadrunners for their decisive victory. You gotta love
speed---or at least respect it!
We've
run this event for five years now. I looked at this year's race as in
indicator of where we go from here. It has given me a renewed feeling that
this race still has a story to be told. Even though we were down to 7
teams from our high of 9 last year, I see it as only a dip in it's long
term growth. Boston Running Club wants to come back next year. Also,
Greater Lowell wants to come here next year--they could only get 10 runners
--too little too late. There are also a few other teams with the seeds
planted. Word will spread.
The
potential and success of this race is to keep bringing in new running
clubs. So that we are not dependant on every runner OR every club showing
up every year. That would be nice but unrealistic. Imagine 10-12
clubs all fielding a team with the same spirit of the race as this year.
Now that would be something-- whether your club's goal was to win it all, finish
competitively or just field a team.
One last thing and probably the most important. As I was looking around at
everybody, I noticed that people were having a good time, alot of fun and
wanted to be there. That will keep this race going.
